The win was based on a totally dominant display from the pack, supplemented by an all-round performance by the entire squad which left head coach Kai Harwood beaming in his analysis in the post-match huddle. He was so happy that he almost awarded the MoM to Kane Book but eventually recovered his composure.
Sustained Avon pressure in the opening quarter was rewarded with two tries from livewire scrum half Kiddie Sheikh. The first came with a classic sniping run as he darted over to touch down near the posts with Rob Fitch adding the extras. Then after several thunderous scrums had created an attacking platform, another forward drive sucked in the Oldfield defence allowing Sheikh to sneak around the blind side for a try in the corner.
Oldfield were being starved of possession as Avon dominated both the tight and loose exchanges with a mixture of powerful play, soft offloads and tenacious tackling. This led to the visitors attempting to run out from near their own line but intense Avon tackling saw the ball spilled and gratefully accepted by Will Bartholomew (once again playing out of position to help out Avon's shortage of backs) to score another converted try near the posts.
Despite missing the injured Dan Griffin’s line out prowess, skipper Kane Book showed his versatility with an inspired performance as a stand-in middle jumper in addition to his usual dominant display at prop. Kane also demonstrated a masterful way of managing his own team to achieve their strengths whilst communicating well with the excellent referee, With Ben May also excelling, the line out provided a steady stream of possession and it was no surprise when Ben Hurd finished off another huge drive for the bonus point try. This gave Avon a comfortable 26-0 lead at half time.
The second half started in the same fashion as hooker Sam Book emerged from the pile of bodies to claim another converted try to further demoralise the opposition. As Avon started to exert their authority still further, a couple more try scoring opportunities out wide were missed with winger Iain Parris screaming for the ball in space. However with Ian Burnell leading the way with a man-of-the-match performance in both attack and defence, it was not long before further tries ensued.
Another imposing scrum saw Dan Cousineau pick up at the base and straddle two attempted tackles to force his way over the line. With the match nearing completion, Oldfield tried to salvage a consolation try to get on to the scoreboard but the honours went convincingly to Avon as Xander Hall-Davis added their 7th try to close out a resounding win.
With utility back Matt Thresher off on a 3 month set of travels next week to add to Avon's injury shortage in the backs, their resources will be tested but his team mates wish him well on his journey. Meanwhile on Saturday 3rd placed Avon are at home to 4th in the Counties 2 Somerset table Clevedon at Hicks Field.
